When it comes to the potential for accelerating online sales, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the ultimate digital marketing strategy. But how does it work?
SEO utilises an understanding of the workings of search engines like Google in order to maximise the visibility of any given website and its content. SEO does this by using keywords to tell Google what your content is about, all in the hope of getting it seen by the people who need it the most.
Put simply, optimising your website for search engines means that more people will be directed to it, which can only increase the likelihood of one thing: more sales.
SEO made simple
SEO is a complicated process, but the importance of it for you and your business can be understood through a short imaginative exercise. Here’s how it works…
Imagine you’re waiting in a queue for a venue. In your hand is a card with a series of keywords written on it. These keywords describe your business and its products and/or services. Perhaps you run a shoe repair service in Colchester, in which case the card in your hand reads: ‘Shoe Repairs, Colchester’.
In the queue along with you are other business owners, each with their own cards and keywords. At the door to the venue is not a bouncer but a potential customer – they’re making a Google search.
It just so happens that this potential customer is searching for a shoe repair shop in Colchester. The problem is that they aren’t aware of your business. Were they to know the name of your business – say, ‘Joe Cloggs’ Shoe Repairs’ – they could find your website straightaway. In this case, they don’t, so they simply Google ‘shoe repairs Colchester’.
It’s important to remember that Google’s job is to direct this potential customer to the services they are trying to find via Google search. Naturally, Google will put well-known shoe repair companies such as Timpsons at the top of the results page. However, for small to medium-sized businesses, there is a way around this issue.
SEO for Accelerating Online Sales
By optimising your website for the keywords that describe your business best, you can increase your chances of ranking at the top of Google for them. That means that anyone Googling the keywords that best describe your business will see your website first. But what does this mean for online sales?
Statistically, websites that rank at the top of Google take over 30% of the total clicks for that page. People want to find what they’re looking for fast. That’s why SEO is so important – especially for small to medium-sized businesses. Ensuring that your business is ranking on Google is a sure-set method for driving more people to your website and increasing the potential for making online sales.
